A Guide to Roman Blinds
76So you are thinking about getting some Roman blinds to spruce up the interior of your home? This is a great choice, and will contribute much to the current and future style that you have going in there. I can’t congratulate you enough for having such a good eye for fashion. I personally think these are one of the best choices out there.
In case you don’t know, these are window blinds which roll up into themselves in “pleats”. They can be made out of just about every material under the sun. And they can be thick or thin depending on what you want.
If they are thin they will allow more sunlight to slip through, and if they are thick you may be able to use a sort of insulation in them. In this case they will obviously make the room darker when rolled down.
The materials that you can get them in include hemp, linen, cotton, silk, and many other custom fabrics. It’s really all up to you. There is a surprising amount of variety available in this arena of home design.
How to Make Roman Blinds
First you’ll need to purchase all your materials. This will not only include the blinds, but a lining as well. You’ll probably want thin material to start out. It is simpler to work with.
Next divide it up into evenly space sections about 10 inches wide. Use a pencil to mark the spacing for yourself and your own reference. Then cut it into 4 inch wide strips. The last step is to insert your lathe or dowels into the lining. Now you have a ready to hang Roman blind. Congratulations.
Roman Blind Kits
If you don’t want to go through all the hassle of making your own, then I suggest getting a Roman blind kit. This is quite frankly a much better way to go unless you are some sort of crafty genius. And even then I wouldn’t recommend it.
So let’s keep it simple and just go buy some kits. They’re available everywhere nowdays: Lowe’s Home Depot, etc. Maybe Bed, Bath and Beyond even has some; I don’t know but I bet they do.
Made to Measure Roman Blinds
Because of the popularity of Romans over the past few years, it has become more and more easy to get them made to measure. This is such a better idea than trying to cut them up yourself. How it works is that you decide what kind of fabric you want and then you make some window measurements. When all done, you call in your order (or e-mail it) and then within a very short time you will have made to measure Roman blinds delivered to your doorstep. You won’t have to do any extra work. This is a superb option if you are short on time or patience or cutting skills.
Ready Made Roman Blinds
Here is your opposite of the measured variety of these blinds. This will actually work for most people because so many windows come in a standard size. That’s why you can afford to get ready made Roman blinds as opposed to having to get something customized. It is important to see if this will fit your bill before getting into the previous more extravagant options. It will cost less too.
Cheap Roman Blinds
Finally, to touch even more on that last topic, I’d like to speak briefly about the cheap blind options available for you. Basically this will involve one of two routes already spoken of: either getting ready mades or making them yourself. If you want it cheap then you’ve got to avoid the custom Roman blind road. That’s the only way to limit your cash expenses here.

Interesting article. I have read a lot about making your own roman shades but never tried it.
This was the most useless article on making a roman blind I could imagine. Woolly insubstantial instructions even a reasonably proficient sewer would find confusing. Precise step by steps guidance with measuring help and accessory requirements are needed. Hopeless !!
wassamatter janet - couldn't make the blind ?
Totally agree with Janet. If anybody can manage to make blinds with these instructions well, congratulations you must some sort of genius. Why, provide such silly instructions that no one can follow?
Are you supposed to cut the fabric which you have just measured for the blind into 4inch strips?
Great hub. However, I don't think that making your own Roman blinds would be an easy job.

Good hub. Can't say I have ever tried to make a roman blind myself but being in the cleaning business I know what to watch out for when going out to get some. The main thing to watch out for is the rings used to feed the string through the back of the drape. Some romans have plastic rings which go brittle over time and can brake. They also cause problems in cleaning as they tend to melt. SO to avoid the costs of having to replace these down the road I would recommend getting metal rings on your romans.
Also, linings are a must, especially if you are going to put the blind in a window that gets a lot of sun.
